Gonzaga Takes Fourth Straight WCAC Title

Yesterday, the Gonzaga Purple Eagles traveled up Rhode Island Avenue to College Park In search for a fourth straight WCAC boys’ lacrosse championship title, while Paul VI looked to make their mark in the WCAC championship game and put an end to a dynasty.

Paul VI opened the game aggressively, netting the first goal of the game by senior attackman Logan Aunon.  Gonzaga answer right back piling on a 5-2 scoring streak in the first, giving the Eagles a 5-3 lead heading into the second.

The Gonzaga Eagles did not let lightning strike twice, as they were able to put together another 4-1 goal run giving them a commanding 9-4 lead early in the third.  The Panthers however did not lay down for the Eagles as they to put together a string of goals outscoring the Eagles 6-1, nearly putting an end to Gonzaga’s dynasty in the third quarter.  Senior Chris Camarca tied the game up at 10 after receiving a crisp pass from fellow teammate and senior Connor Murphy with 7:32 left in the contest.

Gonzaga only trailed for a few seconds once senior Jimmy Kuzman scored a quick goal, putting the team ahead. Both teams traded goals once again, but it wasn’t until Senior Alex Corby rocketed one to the back of the Panthers net that the Eagles would ice the game.

The final horn sounded with a final score 13-11 and an Eagles Victory, adding the fourth straight WCAC victory to their trophy case.

Key Players:

– Alex Corboy had four goals

In the quarterfinals, Gonzaga faced Bishop Ireton and controlled the game from the first faceoff.  The game ended 20-2, advancing Gonzaga to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Gonzaga faced St. Mary’s Ryken.  Earlier in the season, the Eagles defeated St. Mary’s 7-2, but this time the Eagles completely overpowered their opponent in a 19-5 victory.  This win marks the 12th time the Eagles scored over 10 goals and the 19th time Gonzaga held their opponents to under 9 goals.

Now the Eagles head to the WCAC finals to face Paul VI.  Earlier in the year, Gonzaga defeated the Panthers 12-6, but Paul VI has won every game since then.

By continuing to play at their elite level of lacrosse, Gonzaga looks to increase their championship win streak to four consecutive years.  They face Paul VI in the final tonight at 7pm.

WCAC Championship Game: Gonzaga vs Paul VI

Since its creation in 1987, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference has had four different champions.  The first championship went to Bishop Ireton.  After Ireton’s victory, the WCAC has been heavily controlled by DeMatha, who won 17 titles from 1988 to 2009.  In that time span, Gonzaga won four championships and St. Mary’s Ryken won one.  DeMatha’s longest champion streak came when they won eight consecutive titles beginning in 1999.

Recently, DeMatha has lost their hold on the league.  Paul VI knocked DeMatha out of the playoffs in the semifinals.  Gonzaga claimed the other spot in the finals after their semifinal victory to St. Mary’s Ryken.  Now, Paul VI faces off against Gonzaga tonight at 7pm to decide the 2013 champion of the WCAC.

With DeMatha’s recent drop in the WCAC, Gonzaga has been dominating the league instead.  The Eagles currently hold three consecutive championships, which started in 2010.  Now, Gonzaga looks to acquire one last victory of the year to claim the trophy for a fourth consecutive time.

The Eagles are coming off a sensational year.  They finished ranked 2nd in DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings with a 16-2 record.  Gonzaga is currently on a 15 game win streak and on top form.  In their two playoff performances, Gonzaga dominated the competition, scoring 39 goals and only allowing seven, acquiring a +32 goal difference.

Their opponents in the final, Paul VI, will not go down without a fight.  The Panthers also had a 16-2 regular season and are currently on a five game win streak.  Their efforts throughout the year earned them the 31st rank nationally.  If victorious in the final, Paul VI will claim their first WCAC championship.

Like Gonzaga, Paul VI played well in the quarter- and semifinal matches.  In those two games the Panthers tallied 30 goals and only allowed 14 goals, for a +16 goal difference.

The opening faceoffs starts at 7pm tonight.  From there, the teams will battle until the end to decide this close matchup.  The game is important to both lacrosse programs.  It can bring Gonzaga their fourth straight championship.  At the same time, Paul VI can bring home their first WCAC championship.  With both teams having a lot to fight for, this final game will prove to be a dramatic conclusion to two excellent seasons.

Gonzaga Sweeps Bishop Ireton for Playoff Win

On Tuesday, May 7, the #2 ranked Digital Sports Gonzaga lacrosse team crushed Bishop Ireton on the Purple Eagles’ home turf.  The squad brought their game from start to finish and did not back down once, only giving up two goals.  That does not compare to the twenty goals scored by Gonzaga for the WCAC playoff win.  After defeating St. Mary’s Ryken on Thursday, they hold an impressive record of 18-2.  The team is up against the Paul VI Panthers this Monday, 5/13, for the WCAC title.

Gonzaga’s Road to the Playoffs

The regular season has finally come to a close for the Gonzaga Eagles.  The DC boys’ successful campaign ended with a 16-2 season, putting them in 2nd place in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Ranking and 1st in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC).  With league championships in 2010, 2011, and 2012, Gonzaga entered the season as the front runner in their conference and a top contender in the nation.

The Eagles got off to a sluggish start after dropping two of their first five games to top ranked Boys’ Latin and 5th ranked Hill Academy.  After that, Gonzaga finished the season with 13 consecutive victories.  In that stretch, Gonzaga defeated top ranked teams including McDonogh, Georgetown Prep, and Landon School.

Throughout the year, the Eagles displayed elite talent on both sides of the ball.  Their offense performed exceptionally all year, scoring ten or more goals in ten of their 18 games.   Defensively, Gonzaga locked down their opponents, only allowing one team, 1st ranked Boys’ Latin, to score in the double digits.

Now, Gonzaga sits on top of the WCAC.  Playoffs begin today with Bishop McNamara playing Bishop Ireton to break the tie and decide who wins the eight seed spot.  The winner of that game faces off against Gonzaga tomorrow, April 7th, in the quarterfinal.  Gonzaga faired quite well in their encounters with both squads during the season, defeating Bishop McNamara 19-0 and Ireton 19-1.

If the Eagles make it passed that game, they enter the semifinals.  Other strong contenders in the WCAC include 30th ranked Paul VI and St. John’s.  Gonzaga defeated both teams this season, overpowering Paul VI 12-6 and St John’s 16-7.

Entering the playoffs undefeated in their league, Gonzaga looks to use the momentum of 13 consecutive wins to power their way through the playoffs.  By continuing their excellent play both offensively and defensively, the Eagles stand a strong chance of winning their fourth consecutive league championship.
