Rugby: Gonzaga kicks off season with a bang

Gonzaga rugby team capped a busy week with a 17-0 victory over St Gregory’s at the West Shore Invitational in Harrisburg, PA.

The weekend started with the opening MAVRC league game vs Hyde Public Leadership Charter School. The A side rolled to a 62-5 victory with Johnny McMurray leading the way with 16 points including 2 tries. David Penberthy also added 2 tries with Jeff Bruno, Max Johnston, PJ Orlandi, Gabe Free, Victor Calix and John Davis each scoring once. Pat Carter added 3 conversions. The B-side was led by newcomer Nick Howell who scored 4 try’s in a 50-0 win.

Saturday’s first tournament game matched the Eagles vs the defending MARFU club champions and 7th ranked club side in the US West Shore United. The Eagles dominated most of the first half with Johnny McMurray making 2 penalty kicks (one from 43 yards) and Kevin Lee with a try which JMAC converted for 13-0 halftime lead. The second half was a different story as the home team raised their level and went on the offensive. The Eagle defense was sturdy and yielded only a late try for a final score of 13-5.

The ****** B’s then took the field and cruised to a 36-5 victory over  the West Shore B side. Leading the way was Paul Caron with 3 trys. Also scoring was Brian Savercool, McKay Pratt, Brendan Boyle and Tommy “the toe” Jolly adding 2 conversions. Next was St Gregory’s from Scranton, PA. Led by bagpipes and the constant singing of their student body St Greg’s came into the game as the favorite to win the PA / DE / NJ school championship.

The Eagle’s took the field with fire in their eyes as well. In an extremely well played game Gonzaga dominated possession and was the more physical of the 2 teams. David Penberthy scored twice and Dylan Jones once with Johnny McMurray adding a conversion to close out the scoring. This week the Eagle’s face Georgetown Prep on Wednesday and the No. 2-ranked team in the country Xavier HS from NY on Sunday.

WCAC Boys Basketball Title: DeMatha 62, Gonzaga 61

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

DeMatha boys basketball coach Mike Jones put the ball in Jerian Grant’s hands with 9.9 seconds left and the WCAC title on the line.

At that point, Grant had to make a decision.

Was he going to shoot or was he going to pass?

Grant’s decision to pass, finding senior Naji Hibbert wide open underneath the basket for the game-winning layup with 1.8 seconds remaining, gave DeMatha a 62-61 win over Gonzaga Thursday night at a jammed-packed American University.

It’s the Stags’ fourth WCAC title in the past five years after Gonzaga captured the conference crown last season. DeMatha (28-3) came out on top in its final two meetings with the Eagles and won 13 straight games to close out the season.

While Hibbert will go down as getting the game-winning layup, it was Grant’s pass that Jones called the play of the game.

“That might be the best basketball play a young man in high school could ever make because he did not take the shot,” Jones said. “It’s not Naji’s finish, even though that was unbelievable. He went up strong. It was the fact that Jerian was able to deliver that ball.”

Grant inbounded the ball and immediately got it back in his hands. Although Grant has not been DeMatha’s standout player this season, he proved in the WCAC semifinals against McNamara that he is the go-to player as he hit the eventual game-winning layup in the final seconds.

Grant (10 points) dribbled past midcourt and had all five Gonzaga defenders approach him. The junior guard rose up and found Hibbert (11 points) open along the baseline.

Hibbert did a nice job corralling the pass and rose up to lay it in with Malcolm Lemmons bearing down on him and Ian Hummer (game-high 18 points) just below.

“It was the toughest shot of my life,” Hibbert said. “I saw them coming. I just finished.”

DeMatha and Gonzaga went back-and-forth throughout the first half with neither taking more than a four-point lead.

Eagles senior guard Cedrick Lindsay (17 points) exploded with 14 points in the third quarter, giving Gonzaga a six-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

DeMatha hung around until Grant tied the game at 56 with a driving layup with two minutes, 36 seconds remaining. Gonzaga retook the lead on a Hummer free throw before DeMatha freshman James Robinson hit a jumper with 1:33.

Hummer nailed another two free-throws with 1:18 left but Robinson gave the Stags the lead again with a jumper from the free throw line with 23 seconds remaining.

None of the plays were designed for Robinson, but he found the ball anyway. Robinson said he wasn’t nervous to take the shots.

“Every day in practice Coach Jones has me working on those so it’s pretty natural when it’s game time,” Robinson said.

The next play was perhaps the craziest of a nutty night. After DeMatha senior Marcus Rouse missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Victor Oladipo stole a Tyler Thornton (14 points) pass up the sideline. Thornton stole Oladipo’s pass and tapped a pass to Lemmons for a go-ahead layup with 9.9 seconds left.

But just when it seemed that Gonzaga might repeat as WCAC champions, the Stags landed the final punch.

“I could not be proud of all of our guys, every single one of them,” Jones said. “It goes to show what a team can do when they all come together and buy into what we’re doing.”

It is a common thought that good things come in three’s. But all one would have to do is witness the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference boys’ basketball semifinal contest Sunday night for evidence to the contrary.

With the score tied at 53 with just under a minute remaining in the game, DeMatha’s Jerian Grant — who wears jersey No. 44 — proved that good things come in four’s as well.

Grant hit a layup over the outstretched arms of a Bishop McNamara player to give DeMatha a 55-53 lead.

The shot proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Stags of DeMatha advanced to the WCAC title game with a 59-56 victory.

“I just [saw] that they had a big man on me,” Grant explained of the late-game basket. “I saw my chance to get to the basket and finished strong.”

Added DeMatha Coach Mike Jones: “I think he saw he had the mismatch. He had a big guy on him, and Jerian is very good at getting it to the basket.”

Grant had a game-changing fourth quarter as he tied the game at 49 with a three-pointer just minutes before his go-ahead basket. Only seconds after the basket, he converted two free throws giving the Stags a four-point, 57-53 lead.

In addition, the junior also took a charge late in the game that took away a McNamara basket, and scored nine fourth-quarter points in leading DeMatha with a team-high 15.

“He had three huge plays, not even counting the free throws down the stretch,” Jones said. “He also had the charge which was definitely the play of the game.”

“Coach told him at halftime, ‘Jerian Grant, you are the X-factor in this game, you can win this game,’ so he really stepped up,” DeMatha’s Quinn Cook said. “After that three-pointer, he really got going.”

McNamara was led by the hot-hand of guard Rashad Whack as he knocked down six three-pointers, five in the first half, en route to his game-high 28 points, albeit in a losing effort.

“Credit should be given to McNamara,” Jones said. “That is a very good representation of what our league is about. That was great basketball, a great game, and they had a player who played wonderful tonight in Rashad Whack.”

It is only proper to defend what is yours, what you have worked so hard for to obtain and hold on to.

For the Gonzaga Purple Eagles, it captured the right to defend its WCAC title with a 57-48 victory over Paul VI in the WCAC semifinals Sunday night.

Gonzaga jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led for the duration of the game. After gaining a a 10-point, 27-17 lead late in the second quarter, Gonzaga was able to keep the lead in double digits for the better part of the contest.

“I though tonight, the kids did an incredible job from start to finish,” Gonzaga head coach Steve Turner said. “We wanted to do a good job of the boards. They are a big, physical team and when we played them at home last time, they did a really good job against us on the boards.”

Gonzaga’s Ian Hummer played an intricate part of that rebounding process and also scored a team-high 20 points in the victory.

Teammate Tyler Thornton scored 13 points in the victory as well.

“We knew they were going to crash the boards hard,” Thornton said. “Coach told us we had to box out and that’s what we did. We boxed out and rebounded well, and limited them to one possession.”

As far as defending the WCAC title, Thornton added: “It is good to defend our title,” Thornton said. “We knew it was going to be a tough road to get here, we’re here, and now we have to take care of business [Thursday].”

Erick Green led Paul VI with a game-high 23 points in the semi-final loss.

Gonzaga will now face DeMatha Thursday night in the WCAC title game originally scheduled for Monday night but postponed to Thursday, 8 p.m. at American University.

The Purple Eagles and Stags split two games during the regular season with DeMatha winning the latter on Feb. 20, 68-65.

“It is an incredible opportunity,” Turner said of returning to the title game. “A lot of people don’t get this opportunity. We split during the year and I am expecting a heck of a game from both teams.”
