Sitting in 5th place in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings, Gonzaga College High School has certainly made their mark in the lacrosse world.  After dropping two of their first five games to powerhouses 8th ranked Hill Academy and 1st Boys’ Latin, the Eagles responded with nine consecutive wins.  Gonzaga’s most recent victory came against 33rd ranked Paul VI.

Gonzaga came out strong, leading by as many as four goals in the first half.  After a couple of missed opportunities, Paul VI managed to cut the Eagles lead down to just two goals before halftime.  Gonzaga responded with five straight goals to open the third quarter, three of which came before Paul VI’s first possession of the half.

Senior midfielder Joe Fitzpatrick kicked off the scoring spree, netting his third goal of the game 44 seconds into the third.  Then just 46 seconds later, senior attackman Alex Corboy scored the final goal of his hat trick.  Fitzpatrick came down to score again, completing the three goals before Paul VI’s first second half possession.  Sophomores Tommy Monahan and Richie Petitbon hit the net for the last two of the five consecutive goals.

From then on, the Eagles controlled the game on both sides of the ball.  Joe Fitzpatrick led the team with four goals, followed by Corboy, netting a hat trick.  Senior midfielder Max Planning added on another two goals.  The defense also stepped up, holding Senior Robert Murphy, Paul VI leading scorer, to only two goals.  The game finished with a strong 12-6 victory for Gonzaga.

Next, Gonzaga faces off against the Virginia boys at Bishop Ireton on Friday, April 19.  With two days to prepare, Gonzaga will try to continue their win streak.

So far, the Eagles have proven that they can shut down elite teams.  In order to attempt to move further up the rankings, Gonzaga will looking to increase their win streak to straight ten games.
