The Eagles Soar Over Calvert Hall

Gonzaga College High School’s lacrosse team may not have gotten off to the ideal start, but they have made it back on track.  Initially ranked 7th in the Digital Sports Lacrosse Ranking, Gonzaga dropped to 14th after starting the season 3-2, losing to powerhouses Hill Academy and Boys’ Latin.

In a tremendous display of talent and class, Gonzaga responded from their 13-4 loss to Boys’ Latin with a win over 3rd ranked Calvert Hall.  The Eagles jumped out to 5-1 lead in the first half, forcing many turnovers out of the usually accurate Calvert Hall offense.  That did not stop the Cardinals from a strong comeback, marking six unanswered goals in the third quarter, earning a 7-5 lead going into the fourth quarter.  Gonzaga battled back to tie the game with 7:40 left, only to concede a goal 18 seconds later to make it 8-7 Calvert Hall.  Keeping their heads held high, Gonzaga once again fought from behind until Senior and Captain Alex Corboy scored both the game tying and winning goals.  Corboy netted the winning goal with 3:48 left in the game, giving the Eagles a lead that Calvert Hall could not respond to.  Joe Fitzpatrick sealed off the game with a late empty-net goal, 10-8 Gonzaga.

Many Gonzaga players showed exceptional talent in their victory over the Cardinals.  Sophomore Timmy Monahan led the Eagles with four goals, followed by Alex Corboy with two.  Senior Attackman Patrick Meyers displayed great ball movement skills, scoring a goal for himself and marking an astounding six assists.

Using their momentum in their next game, Gonzaga took down Wootton High School in a commanding 12-6 win, marking their second in a row.  Now, Gonzaga finishes the month off with games against DeMatha and St. Mary’s Ryken on Tuesday and Thursday.  After that, the Eagles start April with three tough games against McDonough, Georgetown Prep, and Landon School.

Gonzaga will be fighting for some big wins in the next few weeks.  Now with a 5-2 record, Gonzaga looks to be back to their elite level of lacrosse, capable of making their way back up the lacrosse rankings.
