Gonzaga Football wins first D.C. title game in 50 years

On December 7th, 2014, the Gonzaga Eagles, defeated reigning DCSAA Class 2A champs Woodson Warriors 29-6 at The Catholic University of Americas’ Cardinal Stadium.

Last year, the Warriors won the Class 2A title by defeating Friendship Collegiate 25-8.

This was the first year that D.C.’s top public and private schools played for a championship title since the 1970’s. The cancellation was an outgrowth of a riot that followed the 1962 game.  DCSAA Director Clark Ray envisioned holding all-encompassing city championships, since the DCSAA itself provided an unprecedented organizational apparatus for doing so.  For the first time in 50 years, this is a chance at a state title, by name and in hopes will help restore a vibrant city title game that truly determines the city’s top team.

To qualify for the championship, Woodson defeated Ballou 16-12 and the Eagles of Gonzaga edged past 2013 state runner-up Friendship Collegiate 20-19 in the Class AA semifinals.

The Eagles started out the season without a football field and began practicing at CUA. Gonzaga Head Coach Randy Trivers said the team had challenges from Day One but was able to end the season on a high note, by winning the championship.

The challenges continued in the title game as the Eagles were without several injured starters Richie Petibon, Jabari Greenwood and starting running back Reggie Corbin, and then lost senior QB Rashad Cooper to a shoulder injury. The Eagles turned to freshman QB Khalil Wright.

Running back Tyree Randolph scored three touchdowns against Woodson. He said it was big for the 9-3 Eagles to defeat a team who started the game with a 11-2 record.

Senior Linebacker Sean Fitzgerald was selected MVP of the game and said it meant a lot to go out and win the first D.C. state championship.

Congratulations to the Gonzaga Football team and athletic community!
